How to Uninstall Messenger

The Messenger application is Facebook’s smartphone app for instant messaging. It is a standalone application for iPhones and Android devices, as the main Facebook application no longer includes messaging functionality. If you decide you no longer want to use the Messenger application on your iPhone or Android phone, you can choose to uninstall it completely. In this article, we’ll show you how to uninstall Messenger on both devices.

How to Uninstall Messenger for iPhone

Refer to the steps below for uninstalling the Messenger application on an iPhone running the iOS operating system.

Step 1: Press the home button at the bottom of your iPhone to view your main homescreen.
Step 2: Locate the Messenger application icon. Note that this may appear on a secondary homescreen, depending on where you chose to store it.
Step 3: Press your finger on the Messenger icon and hold it until all of the homescreen’s icons begin to shake. You should also feel a slight vibration from the iPhone.
Step 4: Click the small “X” button that appears in the upper-left corner of the Messenger icon. A confirmation pop-up will appear on the screen.
Step 5: Tap the “Remove” option in the confirmation pop-up window to finish uninstalling the Messenger application.

How to Uninstall Messenger for Android

The steps below show how to uninstall the Messenger application on Android smartphones.

Step 1: Press the home button on your Android smartphone to view all application icons.
Step 2: Launch the “Settings” tool by tapping on the gear icon.
Step 3: Go to the “Apps” category in the settings menu, which appears underneath the “Device” heading. This category may also be labeled as “Applications” or “App Manager,” depending on what version of Android you are using.
Step 4: Scroll through the list of installed applications and tap on “Messenger.” If you cannot find it in the list, make sure the “Downloaded” tab is highlighted at the top of the screen.
Step 5: Click the “Uninstall” button in the application details screen.
Step 6: Tap the “OK” option in the confirmation window to fully uninstall the Messenger application from your Android phone.

When you uninstall the Messenger application from your smartphone, all of its stored data will be removed. However, your conversation history will still be accessible through the Facebook website, and you can re-download the application at any time.
